Waters Rising: A Journey Through Flooding Stories

Exhibition Dates: November 8, 2024 – March 16, 2025

Head to Perth Museum to delve into its latest exhibition: Waters Rising, an evocative showcase that delves into the multifaceted narratives and artifacts related to flooding, on both a local and global scale. From ancient biblical accounts to recent events closer to home, this exhibition illuminates the growing threats posed by climate change while highlighting the impact of extreme weather on communities, businesses, and infrastructure in Perth and Kinross.

A Global Perspective

Waters Rising features a stunning array of historically relevant items, including: an Egyptian sarcophagus with signs of Nile flood damage; ceremonial brass bowls that commemorate the Hindu flood myth of Vasudeva and Krishna; historical etchings and mezzotints depicting Noah’s Great Flood and much, much more.

Contemporary works, by the likes of Norval Morrisseau, Will Maclean, and Alan Kilpatrick, will also feature within the exhibition, hammering home the temporal relevance of climate issues both locally and further afield. This diverse collection invites visitors to reflect on the historical and cultural significance of flooding while inspiring action in response to today’s climate crisis.

Share Your Story

Personal accounts of flooding highlight that personal items, such as letters and photographs, are amongst the most sorely missed possessions in the wake of flooding. To enrich its exhibition, the museum are inviting the community to contribute their own images documenting flooding locally. To share your images, please email [email protected] (please keep files under 25MB).

Once collated, these images will form a display highlighting locals’ lived experience of flooding. If you do not have any relevant images, but would still be interested in contributing memories to the exhibition, the museum is encouraging visitors to pen their memories on specially designed postcards available at Perth Museum, Perth Art Gallery, and Culture Perth and Kinross Libraries. This community-sourced collection will serve as a living archive of flood experiences, bridging past and present.
